All new landscapes require some initial care to ensure the survival of the new plants and sod. Here are a few requirements for the care of your landscape: 1. Water thoroughly every day during the hot weather, every other day during Spring and Fall, and even in the winter dry periods. The root systems are very confined when newly planted and do not cover ample space to take up enough moisture that is required by the plant. Do not over water. Check the plants daily by putting your finger in the soil beside the root ball. If the soil is still moist, delay watering for a day and re-check the next day. Some areas that have more shade will require less water than areas with full sun. Continue this watering process for the first year of root system establishment.New sod must be watered daily because of the reduced root system. Early morning is the best time to water. Thoroughly water each morning to ensure that the water is distributed to the area evenly. If sod or plants are watered in the evening, moisture will remain on the leaves overnight and encourage mold or mildew growth. If the sod or plants are watered during the heat of the day, many times the moisture evaporates before the plant has a chance to use the water. 2. Fertilize the plants with a balanced formula of N,P, and K (for example: 10-10-10 or 14-14-14). Try to use StaGreen or Nurseryman’s Special brands that can be found in most Farmers Association. Stores. Follow the recommendations on the bag as to how much to apply. Do not “dump” the fertilizer at the base of the plant, as this will cause burning. Carefully sprinkle the pellets around the root area. Thoroughly water the plants after application. Any annuals may be fertilized with Osmocote according to the label. Sod must be fertilized about every 45 days with a balanced formulation (for example 10-10-10) starting in March. In the summer months a higher first number formulation (for example 27-14-10) should be used. This is a higher nitrogen content that will allow the blades to flush new growth. Make sure that the first number is SCU (Sulphur Coated Urea) nitrogen. This is a slow release nitrogen that will give even growth during the growing period. In the fall, fertilize with a high last number (for example 5-10-20) that will strengthen and encourage deep rooting for winter. Thoroughly water after each application. 3. Mowing may take place 2-3 weeks after sod installation. Just make sure that the sod is well rooted before mowing. 4. Hydroseeded areas need to be watered frequently during the first 4 weeks of germination and establishment. It is recommended that the new seeds be watered lightly 4 times a day to ensure complete germination of the seeds. The seeds must be kept moist to allow germination. If all plants and sod are kept in accordance to the above specifications, Proscapes Inc. will warranty all materials and labor for a period of 6 months following completion of project. |
